About Me
glass needed for constructing or repairing a greenhouse

One thing that I loved about my house when we bought it three years ago was the greenhouse in the yard. I knew that it needed a lot of work, but knew that I would eventually get around to making the repairs and would have a wonderful greenhouse to spend my free time in. I had to do some research to find out about replacing the glass panels that had been broken over the years. I wanted to be sure that the glass I was installing wasn't going to stop the sun's nutrients from reaching the plants and that the glass would be durable and last for many years. If you are building or repairing a greenhouse, visit through my blog to learn all about the glass that should be used.

Block Your Drafty Windows And Keep Your House Warmer

Vicente Morales

The windows of your house let in light. Sadly, that's not all they let in. Older windows can let in drafts, and allow the heat from your house to leak out in the winter time. That is not only not very comfortable, it's very expensive. The ideal situation would be to replace your windows. However, while you are waiting to replace them, you still have to deal with drafty old windows and the heat escaping out of your house. There are ways to block those drafts so that you aren't wasting your money while you wait for new windows.

Weatherstripping

This is the easiest thing to do first. It's also fairly inexpensive. You can get rolls of weatherstripping at any hardware or home improvement store. You don't need a hammer or screwdriver to apply it, since it has an adhesive. All you need to do is press it into place. On your windows, the best place for weatherstripping is along the bottom of the window where it closes. The weatherstripping blocks the air by helping the window to seal better.

Spray Foam Insulation

While this product is usually associated with insulation inside your wall, you can also use it to seal gaps in between your window and your walls. You can get a spray can of insulation at your local hardware or home improvement store. When you spray it, make sure that you use less than you think you will need. The foam is like shaving cream. It starts out small and expands. You can always add more as needed, but it is very difficult to get rid of too much. Once you are finished, you can sand down the insulation so that it is flush with the walls. Make sure that you wear a dust mask if you choose to do this.

Window film

There are different kinds of film that you can put on your window. For example, there is a clear film that you can use. With this kind of film, you tape it to the window frame, or the wall around the window. Then you use a hair dryer to shrink it up. The benefit is that you can still see through the window without a problem. It will still let all the light in. It is also easy to remove at the end of winter. You can install it on your own, but it is much easier if you have another person help you with it.

The other kind of window film is one that you can put right on the windows themselves. They don't block the drafts as much, but the film is insulating, adding another layer between your house and the elements. This film is usually tinted and not as easy to see through. That means it can darken your house up and block your view.

You want your house to be nice and warm during the winter. Old and drafty windows keep your house from being warm. Until you can replace the windows using companies like Aladdin's Glass & Screen Products Inc, block the drafts from coming in.
